A Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV) is a non-linear resistor primarily composed of metal oxides (zinc oxide (ZnO)). Its resistance value changes significantly with variations in applied voltage. Below the threshold voltage, its resistance is very high, allowing minimal current flow—similar to a closed valve. When voltage exceeds the threshold, its resistance drops sharply, and current flow increases dramatically—acting like an open valve. Utilizing this characteristic, MOVs suppress abnormal overvoltages commonly encountered in circuits, protecting circuits from voltage damage.
